Can Money Buy Happiness? Perspectives from Across the Globe
A global survey of over 136,000 people in 132 countries included questions about income and happiness revealed that while happiness usually rises with income, positive feelings don’t necessarily follow.
“The public always wonders: Does money make you happy?” University of Illinois professor emeritus of psychology Ed Diene said. “This study shows that it all depends on how you define happiness, because if you look at life satisfaction, how you evaluate your life as a whole, you see a pretty strong correlation around the world between income and happiness,” Diene said. “On the other hand it’s pretty shocking how small the correlation is with positive feelings and enjoying yourself.”
According to the authors:
Although the meeting of basic and psychological needs mediated the effects of income on life evaluation to some degree, the strongest mediation was provided by standard of living and ownership of conveniences. In contrast, feelings were most associated with the fulfillment of psychological needs: learning, autonomy, using one’s skills, respect, and the ability to count on others in an emergency. Thus, two separate types of prosperity—economic and social psychological—best predict different types of well-being.

U.S. To Arab World: ‘Stop Hating Us Or Suffer The Consequences’
Too funny, from the Onion:
WASHINGTON, DC— In a strongly worded ultimatum Tuesday, President Bush warned the Arab world to “stop hating the United States or suffer the consequences.” “You have exactly 10 days to put aside your deep-rooted resentment and rage toward America and learn to like us,” said Bush in a message broadcast live to 17 Arab nations via Al Jazeera. “If you fail to comply, prepare to have the full might of the U.S. military brought down upon you.” Bush also threatened to carpet-bomb any Arab region whose populace continues to be angry about America’s longtime bombing campaign against Iraq and the decade-long U.S. sanctions that have led to the malnutrition deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqi children.
